While many people work hard not to stereotype others based on their identity, societal stereotypes can still affect us (and our students). In fact, the very existence of societal stereotypes can affect our performance on a wide variety of endeavors, from test scores to athletic performance, even without active stereotyping by individuals we encounter. Today we know much more about this concept, termed “stereotype threat,” thanks to decades of research by Claude Steele and others. Join us for reading and discussion of short excerpts from his book, Whistling Vivaldi.

Shuttle service will be available to help individuals get to the Mitchell Athletic Center from the flagpole as needed, and from the Mitchell Athletic Center to Eisner Fine Arts, and finally from Eisner Fine Arts to Curtis Dining Hall.
