The interdisciplinary Black Studies Program is designed to investigate the black experience in Africa, North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, and in other parts of the African diaspora. The program draws on the expertise of faculty members in all four academic divisions of the college: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and the fine arts. It is consistent with the liberal arts philosophy of exploring issues fundamental to the development of a broadly educated person and the creation of a humane spirit.

In the Earth and environmental sciences, we investigate our planet from space to the core, understood in the broadest terms, from a natural science perspective. We seek to understand how they have evolved and continue to evolve, how Earth systems, including human agents, interact to produce the environment in which we live, and how present and future changes may impact the habitability of Earth. The central goal of the department is to educate students about the nature and history of the Earth, the processes that shape the Earth, and the impacts those processes have on humans, other organisms, and the environment in the past, present and future. An understanding of the Earth is an essential component of global citizenship. Humanity faces many critical environmental issues, including global climate change, water shortages, loss of arable land, natural hazards such as earthquakes and flooding, and the dwindling access to energy resources; furthermore, vulnerability to these issues is disproportionate across humanity. Citizens and professionals with training in the Earth and Environmental Sciences will contribute to addressing these and other problems, while increasing opportunities for humans to live sustainably and equitably on the Earth.

The Spiritual Life Center works to support the Denison Community– students, staff, and faculty– in their spiritual learning and practice by providing support, resources, pastoral care and programming. The Spiritual Life Center welcomes all and is open to any faith tradition, any path and those still seeking.

Groups:
The Spiritual Life Center supports multiple student-led groups for our Christian students including Denison Christian Community (DCC), Agape, Food and Faith, and Bible Study Groups. Denison has active programs for Jewish, Muslims, and Buddhists. Students who are more broadly spiritual without a specific tradition gather in other affinity groups such as Earth Spirituality or {W}Holy Queer (LGBTQ). The SLC also holds meditation and mindfulness events, spiritual healing, and celebrates a wide breadth of sacred holidays. The staff is always willing to nurture a new group, offer spiritual direction or be in dialogue.

Facilities:
The Spiritual Life Center is located in Gilpatrick House on Chapel Walk. It houses common space, study space, a kitchen and a small resource library. A meditation space with a Buddhist shrine provides space for quiet and centering. Muslim students maintain a prayer room at the rear of the house. A Wudu Station is also available on the first floor. A Torah scroll in the common area anchors weekly Shabbat.
